RE: A plethora of PaaS options
mhug@... 7th Mar 2008
Hello

As usual a very pertinent summary of SaaS evolutions, which illustrates enough how the IT industry enters its "industrial revolution" with -aaS.

However I believe you missed one sort of PaaS: its the business integration platform (whether you call it SaaS Integration Platform or Internet Service Bus or whatever). An IT system is not a collection of disconnected components: business softwares and services need to be linked together or integrated. The key point here is that integration is primarily not a technical issue but rather a business one: offering API of any sort is not an answer, its a mean and a minimum requirement for a credible cloud-based offering. You need a business oriented platform that abstract the technical complexity of the cloud based softwares and services, lets you concentrate of defining the business logic orchestrating them, and finally runs that orchestration.

You could call it the "cloud orchestration platform", providing ubiquituous, business centered and on demand linking between all services and softwares.
