Excellent article, Phil. For the business users we create and integrate solutions for, level 5 Cloud Application tools like QuickBase are their salvation. It lets them have sufficient power and integration capability, with a level of independence to create and enhance many of their own solutions.
Also, we've found that key applications created in one platform can ususally be re-created (and improved on) in another platform without a prohibitive level of effort.
