Of course viruses won't disappear if Windows becomes less popular. Still, (1) Windows is not going to disappear either; if you're not running Windows, the malware will almost always go elsewhere. That's going to be true for a long time to come, I think. (2) Windows is inherently harder to secure, because on the one side it claims to offer much more seamless integration, but that comes at the cost of having to trust the system. On the other side, the system is made deliberately fragile (complex and untrustworthy) because of the need to integrate the implementation to keep the Justice Department away. Microsoft does a great job under those constraints, but Windows will remain subject to new vulnerabilities with every release until the goal of system design becomes simplicity and security rather than complexity and convenience.
