Why don't you give Mandriva Linux http://mandriva.com/ a try, they even have PPC versions, if you are using a PPC Mac, that will rejuvenate an older Mac, and, of course, the x86 version will simply install right on to an x86 Mac. Of course you could run Mandriva Linux as a dual boot option, or even inside a VirtualBox http://www.virtualbox.org/ VM, or better still, assuming Apple allow you to use the software you've paid for as you choose, which I doubt, install Mandriva Linux and run MacOSx inside the VirtualBox VM.
