There's more to it than that

I say Tivo's loss has more to do with their higher costs. At least that's why I got a DVR from my cable provider (Bright House) and not from Tivo.

First you pay $150 for the Tivo box, then you pay $13 a month for basically guide information. The DVR I get from my cable provider is $7 a month, plus you don't have to buy the box. And the TV tuner in their DVR can access the digital cable channels without the aid of a cable box.

With price comparisons like this, people are never going to switch to Tivo, just because it has a few nicer features in the user interface. It would make a lot more sense for them to license this technology to cable and satellite providers, instead of trying to sucker the public into buying it.
