I don't know really, it seems to me the new great business model created by Google and the likes has benefited advertisers far more than the general public. It's almost impossible to find a fun user created site in all of the corporately owned rubbish.

It used to be you could promote this sort of thing on the web and get shed loads of hits but these days it seems like you have to pay for everything. The popularity of your site is more and more down to the size of your wallet.
