In response to you and GameOvR, I think you are missing the point.

Currently there a large number of facebook applications that have their very own currency that players can pay "real money" to get ahead in the game. Yet facebook does not make a penny out of this very lucrative business. It sounds like facebook want to launch its own standardized currency so it can take a cut of the huge profits some of the apps developers are making on the back of facebook
