As a recruiter, I encourage jobseekers to be active on
social networks, not necessarily to be directly
exposed to opportunities, but rather to expand their
network of friends and colleagues so that in the off
chance a member of their network is able to refer
friends to an opportunity, they do not miss that
window.
Also, in regards to privacy it is up to the
participant in the social network to determine how
much of their personal or professional life they want
exposed. I see nothing wrong with having a profile
that states what you do for a living. In a lot of
cases, that will be enough for members of your network
to refer you to opportunities.
