RE: Bill Gates - the science guy
P. Douglas 18th Jul 2009
I saw one of the Richard Feynman lectures, and it was really, really great. It was arguably one of the best lectures I've ever seen. It was clear, coherent, and engaging. Feynman constantly placed elements of what he was saying into context - which is crucial for understanding, and is a feature that is woefully missing from many lecturers' techniques. Aside from that, I however ran into the important technical issue of the Microsoft Research streaming application causing my CPU usage to soar to 100%, resulting in some video skipping and other issues. (I wish MS would do things like create slick applications [such as Channel 9, and MS Research videos] on top of windows Media Player, and allow users to, among other things, download videos to their PCs for the best user experiences [even with some user restrictions]. Also I think it would be nice if MS allowed users to access the Windows applications via Terminal Services, and phase out the Channel 9, etc. web sites.)

Apart from the above, I believe that having interactive computer learning experiences accompanied by 3D drawings and animations (in which the relative positions of elements of an area of study are always established and maintained), can go a long, long way to making Science more engaging and comprehensible.

I'm glad Gates is doing very significant things with his foundation work. I'm sure millions of people will be happy on account of it.
