I think it's amazing that Apple gets so much free publicity from the media, and others, who seemingly can't wait to gush over anything Apple. Always going on about how "cool" it is, the hype rarely goes into detail about the real drawbacks of owning the product(s) produced by, what is arguably, the most controlling company in its respective industries. Instead of listening to what the consumer wants, Apple tells them what they can have, and the sheep just go along. While attention is warranted in the case of Apple's media players, and maybe the iPhone, the hype over Apple's computers is way over the top considering their 9%-12% (depending upon the study cited) market share.
Additionally, what should be perceived disapprovingly is that, while Apple is not above building their own market share on the backs of other companies' products (Bootcamp - Microsoft), Heaven forbid that anyone else does something similar with an Apple product (Palm Pre - iTunes). Instead, Apple is not only given a free ride (due to its draconian EULAs) but defended by the hype machine and the fanbois.
I'm sorry, but I just don't "get" this ridiculous love affair with Apple and its products. It seems to turn ordinarily discriminating consumers into nearly religious zealots who feel compelled to preach the "gospel" of Apple. It's Unbelievable! Industrial design isn't everything, folks.
