I've owned or at least had plenty of hands on time with all the major smartphones (Palm, Winmo, Blackberry, iPhone, Android). I've got to say that Android stood out as the best of the bunch.
As far as application content, it depends on what you're trying to get out of it. Both Android and iPhone have lots of really cool apps, but the iPhone is a little more skewed towards games and toys. For utility, Android does more, does it better, and cheaper. While hand-held time-wasters are always welcome, it's not a category I need my phone to exceed in.
