because facebook has tried to make itself an essential means of contact. the account, at no financial cost, still eats up a tremendous amount of time and resources, and a number of people i know use facebook to replace, rather than supplement, email. they rely on it to function and keep abreast of friends and colleagues, and much as people were upset with microsoft when hotmail accounts were hacked, this disrupts their ability to function as they'd like to in the modern era.
