People always claim that everyone should just
be fine with Facebook, Gmail and other "free"
services being down because they are free.
However, this isn't true.
These companies - especially Google have
revenue in the millions or billions of dollars.
They obtain this revenue by selling
advertising. They are able to sell advertising
because the users of their website spend time
viewing the advertising (whether they realize
it or not - they do, otherwise advertising
would be pointless). So as a user of such
websites we pay by investing our time to use
these websites and to view the advertisements
on the site. Time is money, so these websites
are not free and should be held accountable
just the same as any other business where we
"pay" for use. When a website believes a
business model based on advertising is more
profitable for them than a subscription based
one - that's their choice but it doesn't change
the fact that they are a for profit business
where the entire basis of their revenue is
based on their users. Whether it's directly or
indirectly makes no difference in terms of
accountability.
