A lot of the articles I've read about this have indicated that the DS has a huge following of seniors with games such as Brain Age, but they have trouble manipulating the thin stylus and reading the small window. By making the stylus bigger, it will be easier for them to hold, and making the screen larger (even with no increase in resolution) will make it easier to read.
Japan has a growing mature population, and they may make a lot more inroads to them with this upgrade. I wouldn't buy it for my 7 year old daughter, but I'd buy it for my 68 year old mother.
In this case - bigger is better.
