Its a marketing ploy by Apple to drum up demand. Each bestBuy only had a few to sell to begin with. I bought mine in a nJ store that had 16 of them 4 for display and 12 for sale. So now investors may think "WOW the Bestbuys all sold out! the iPad is a HIT!" Well if you give em just a few then of course they will sell out. Another marketing stunt by Apple. Good job Steve!
