Yes OSX is a variant of the FreeBSD operating
system code named Darwin and NeXT OS. there is
some good information available in this
developers forum post.

as well. Which mentions the original code was
based on Steve Job's work on the NeXT OS when he
got canned from Apple way back when (my father
followed that very closely and had a lot of time
and interest placed in the OS, and of course now
exclusively uses OSX systems)
