"Microsoft is not known as a BI company. SAS, IBM, SAP, and Oracle immediately come to mind for most CIOs when they think business intelligence."
That's been an outdated notion for a while now. Since SQL Server 2000, Microsoft has been aggressively pursuing investment in the BI space. Improvements in OLAP, ETL and Reporting tools along with integration with Sharepoint (and aquisition of ProClarity) has given them alot of traction. Most of these tools come with a SQL Server license. With other vendors you have to buy these tools seperately. The latest Gartner magic quadrant publication has Microsoft in the leadership quadrant.
