I get that he's not into iTunes, but what does Google vs. Apple have to do with music/players? Google's never mentioned anything remotely close to interest in competing with Apple in the music/player realm; If that's so, your son's going to be stuck without a media player for a long time. Lots of excellent options for media aside from iTunes (though iTunes is a system hog, it's definitely effective and pretty), such as Winamp, WMP, so on and so forth. Lots of good "small-time" players too that don't have the huge features, but manage playlists as well as any of the others. I've never been a fan of using my Web browser as my media player, simply because all that stuff bogs down load times more and more. Separate apps means separate threads, and to me that's quicker performance.
But to the topic on hand - I prefer Chrome because it loads quicker and renders pages faster on my machine. Not to say I hate Firefox; In fact, it's quite the opposite. I'm just preferential to Chrome for its performance.
