This solution with iPhone 3G worked for me:
Delete your Gmail account on iphone.
Then add a new Exchange account (http://www.google.com/support/mobile/bin/answer.py?answer=138740&topic=14252)
Then do this:
http://www.google.com/support/mobile/bin/answer.py?answer=138740&topic=14252
Worked perfectly after!
