Perhaps, the noted comment on death of privacy is misleading since it was originally referring only to online privacy & (from reading CRM SOL v. 4) SCRM does not limit itself to that small area. To apply the quote in a general sense, to all types of transactions, would violate the 4th amendment and the entire foundation of trust between consumers & credit card issuers or other types of vendors.

Generally speaking, privacy is really about individual control over the information made available about us as people, and the trust we place in company's & others to treat such information with respect and knowledge of International & US laws, in addition to the fact that online and offline data are routinely combined now.

There are other types of privacy that customers need to concern themselves with today. e.g. genetic privacy, locational / physical privacy & other types of informational privacy that may or may not intersect with online - financial, medical, sexual, political or organizational (trade secrets). Any or all may be involved in serving customers' needs & wants in a modern customer ecosystem. No?

I totally agree that if you don't want it shared, don't put it online. The concept of shared responsibility is obscured by the phrasing, but bears examination. Customers have to be educated about their role in the privacy ecosystem. Then again, so do our friends, families, employees and executives who might place information about others online without considering the ramifications.

As pointed out by GW Law Prof. Daniel J. Solove and Peter Swire, Pres. Obama's privacy advisor, privacy is a misunderstood and badly defined concept in today's society.
