Agreed, Android handles it for you very well, though when you have a recent phone with a lot of memory, Android might leave everything running, and there are apps you don't want to have them running all the time, such as games! So I use an ATK (System Tuner) to actually kill all my installed app when I don't use them!

But I don't kill any other apps, which are mostly needed and will often restart by themselves, eg GMail, etc...

It can make a difference and keep your available memory very high, as Android has an auto-killer based on low memory conditions, but set too low! This can also be set to increase available memory and reduce the chances of running out of memory!

On the long run, phone runs smoother!
