The OS cost is passed on, the oem doesn't eat it

Think about it. apple makes iphones for $200 and sells them to ATT for $600 so ATT has to subsidize $400 out of your plan. htc, lg, samsung, etc can make the same phone with OS license and typical consumer electronics markup for about $200. That could be the unlocked price! a carrier could give them away for free and still be subsidizing only half what ATT does for an iphone. or charge $200 and subsidize nothing. This is what the market should drive to to get volume. The only loser is apple...
