"Out-of-band" has it's origins in communications with regard to control signals. In-band signalling is when the control information is passed in the same channel (band) as the information. Anyone old enough to remmber all the various tones when an analog (land line) long distance phone call was made? That is in-band signalling. Out-of-band signalling is when the control information is in a seperate channel.

As for the Adobe patch, I am assuming it is an "out-of-cycle" delivery. Not that the cycle is defined. The Microsoft patch cycle is monthly on the second Tuesday. If they release a patch, for exmple, on the third Friday, it would be an out of cycle release.
