"There is an important supporting role for IT but history has shown that only in a small number of companies does IT lead business innovation."
I would like to play devil's advocate a bit in this case. You would be hard pressed to find some business manager from an HR or Finance department that truly understands technology and how it may service them. IT folks live and breathe this stuff proudly wearing their "geek" badges on their puffed out chests. The first adopter of new technology is always going to be the technologist -not the HR generalist, or the Financial Analyst.
I would never suggest that IT should lead business innovation, but to minimize their role in the future would be pure folly.
