As an avid cyclist who already uses a very fine application, mapmyride (http://www.mapmyride.com/) on my iphone with great success, I am not convinced for the need to move the phone from my jersey pocket to a precarious handlebar mount. This places the phone right out in the elements 100% of the time. Rain, road slime, SWEAT, and a host of other nefarious elements are bound to find their way into the phone. I have a hard enough time keeping a $50 cycling computer clean and safe. Why do I want to put my trusted iPhone out in the open where it can be all too easily damaged or stolen while I wait in line for a Starbucks?
I have to admit the information is fascinating. Again, as an avid cyclist I have no need for a map while riding. I already know where I?m going. Speed, ride time, time, heart rate, and power are all nice to have. I?d add gradient in as well but that is more useful with downloaded maps.
Battery life is another issue along with weight. To have a viable iBike power meter one needs an extra battery. More weight, a separate charger in the garage for the bike, and an environmental nightmare not really adding any value.
For now I?ll stick with a phone in the pocket and a proper cycling computer on the bike. For that matter on most rides I?ll just leave the phone at home!
