Great points. Not only are the types of data a key consideration for what makes sense to send to the cloud but how you access that data is critical too. Even the largest clouds have their outages and perform differently than local storage. The gateways to cloud storage are going to be a critical key component in this upcoming migration.
At Nasuni (http://www.nasuni.com) we set out to convince people that cloud storage is ready for primary storage but expected some early resistance with more people using the Nasuni Filer for backup or DR in the early days. We've been pleasantly surprised to see that 90% of our customer base is already convinced that the cloud is ready for primary storage for the right kinds of data.
