One of the reason the local Indian brands captured big market share in such a short period was because they made phones as demanded by Indian consumers.
Like, today the most sought after feature in a phone in India is a 'Dual SIM' phone, a phone that can be used simultaneously with two operators (In India, phones are independent from operators, you can use any phone with any operator, there is not contract). The local companies offered this feature in most of their models, while Nokia ignored it, loosing lot of market share.
