This could very well be the case. They've done it before with the iPhone, releasing a new revised version in a record 3 months after releasing the iPhone 3G. There iPods also saw crazy update cycles.
I expect them to show the new iPod Touch with cam (facetime) and retina display in September. Together with new iPod nano for the holiday lineup. I'm guessing they will then announce this revised iPad. This may be the strongest lineup leading up to the holiday they've ever had (including the recently announce selling like candy iPhone 4).
These slow moving competitors announcing tablets sometime in the future just don't get it.
