related to the same problem that grounded a lot of Sony (and other manufacturer's laptops). In newer electronic equipment, there has been a move toward lead free metals. When pure tin is used, either in platings, finishes or solders, "Whiskers" can grow, which eventually create short circuits. This can happen in the batteries, and cause them to discharge through very little resistance, which generates a lot of heat.
