Nice article Heather, and nice response Barry and Eirikur. As Eirikur knows (since I interviewed him) we are doing some research into the energy efficiency and carbon consequences of cloud computing. Clearly energy source, server power consumption, PUE, and utilization all have a significant impact on carbon gas emissions. We are in the process of quantifying these different approaches and would be happy to share with you our conclusions when they are complete.
