My namesake from 2000 years ago has what is known as the 4 Gates of Patanjali:
Before you speak, think:
1. Is it True?
2. Is it Necessary?
3. IS it Kind"
4. Is it the Right Time?
Now, if we followed these priciples, we would certainly have a lot less conflict in the world.
It should be noted that:
- If any fails, don't speak.
- If all pass, you MUST say it!
Now, this same reasoning can also be applied to data collection, in the form of:
1. Is it Valid?
2. Is it Necessary?
3. Is it Beneficial?
4. Is it Timely?
Again, similar consequences ensue:
- If any fail, don't collect or keep it.
- If all pass, you MUST collect it and keep it.
Imagine how much storage could be saved and needless data-sifting could be avoided if these infomation principles were followed.
Of course, these principles must be viewed in the context of business imperatives (such as what is Valid) and legal requirements (such as what is Required and Timely).
