Actually, while it did not mean criminal in many places the term hacker meant stupid! At a lot of good computer science schools hacker meant "hacking away without a plan", something Levy never covered.
Of course he did an excellent coverage of RMS's theft of copyrighted Lisp code, so the book is not all bad. Now if people would just realize that even Emacs is stolen!
