I haven't been following the iPhone 3G iOS 4 saga very closely but this article did find its way to me last week:

They concluded that 4.1 is faster than 4.0 but it is still slower than iOS 3. In other words, installing iOS 4 on a 3G is like installing Vista RTM on a P4 with 512MB of RAM.
