Linux was bound to be a failure, because the OS radicals, went around town tom-tomming that with Linux, you have the choice to change the Kernel. OS guys are software geeks who do not know that 99% people use software to solve everyday problems like billing,payroll, inventory management, calculations and wordprocessing etc. Nobody is interested in changing the kernal.
Only 1% of the programmers know assembly language and even amongst them only 1% know OS architecture. And I don't think even they want to meddle with the kernel of an OS.
