I wouldn't call it nonsense. Even if they are using Google's results to help rank sites, isn't that akin to Google using Yahoo's directory to help rank sites?
The only thing this 'experiment' proves to me is that Google can and does manipulate search results. How deep that rabbit hole goes is anyone's guess.
