Telstra offers 24-month phone warranties

Telstra has rolled out two-year warranties for all mobile handsets on 24-month contracts except Apple's iPhones following discussions with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC).

"Telstra has decided to do what's right and fair for consumers, and has been negotiating with manufacturers to bring in warranty periods that last for the length of a consumer's contract," ACCC chairman Graeme Samuel said today in a statement.

Telstra's already had success with some manufacturers, providing 24-month warranties for HTC, BlackBerry and ZTE phones.

"It is important for consumers and suppliers to realise that the Trade Practices Act implies certain statutory rights into consumer contracts. Just because the manufacturer's warranty period is up, it does not mean that consumers can be hung out to dry if they are left with a faulty product and ongoing service contract."

The primary obligation to provide remedies for problems rested with Telstra, according to the commission, and not the phone manufacturers.

The extension of Telstra's warranties followed an ACCC investigation last year, which saw Vodafone provide an undertaking that it would provide a 24-month warranty for any phone sold on a 24-month contract.

The commission is still in discussions with Optus seeking a similar warranty policy.

The ACCC said that although most manufacturers were honouring warranties, it still had concerns around warranty issues with Apple's iPhone.

  • Why on earth is Apple allowed to differ here?

    It should be a fairly simple thing. If your selling something with a contract you provide a warranty for the length of the contract. If Apple will only provide a 12 month warranty, then you have 2 options, extent the additional 12 months yourself, or only provide 12 month contracts. The ACCC is being very soft on this and they really need to pick up their game.

  • The ACCC has moved in the right direction with warranties matching contract periods. Now they just have to enforce it.
    Apple are not above Australian law and must be forced to comply or go home.
    There are now plenty of other phones out there that are far more useful and less restricted than the iPhone so it would be no great loss if iPhone was banned here.
  • Apple doesn't sell the phone. Telstra can offer the phone on whatever contract they like and will have to pay for the extended warrantee.

    Apple is complying with Australian law, the ACCC has said it is up to Telstra alone. If apple doesnt want to pay some of the cost then Telstra should raise prices for apple products and customers can decide whether it is worth buying apple.
  • Telstra 24 month warranty on all handsets except for Iphone is not the case at the moment. I have spoken over the phone with two Telstra sales reps in the last 2 days. The second one going away and investigating extensively whether there is an extended warranty. The 24 month warranty from Telstra is only on certain manufacturer's phones (eg HTC) and not Motorola. To make matters worse they have recently removed the option for consumers to pay for the warranty extension so we are now worse off. I was told it was to due to some manufacturers not taking responsiblity for repairs after the first 12 months. I guess Telstra was losing more money than they were making on the warranty extension fee. If they are negotiating with the other manufacturers on this matter I'm sure this will change in the future. For the time being my only option to extend the warranty (suggested to myself by the Telstra rep) is to order the phone/contract through JB Hifi and pay $89 for their in-house warranty extension.
