The crisis at Granville Technology Group, the UK's largest computer retailer, deepened on Wednesday after the administrators were called in.

According to concerned employees, police have been sent to the Burnley headquarters of Time Computers, which is owned by Granville. It is understood that some employees have been locked into the building.

Staff had been told to expect an announcement at 1100 on Wednesday, but this was cancelled. A further announcement was due at midday.

The company has been besieged by rumours all week after the staff were paid late on two occasions. The company eventually said that its bankers, HSBC, had suspended its credit facilities, but this has been disputed by company insiders.

It was also rumoured that major creditors, including HP and AMD, had suspended deliveries. Earlier this week, the company halted most of its production forcing some staff to take holidays.

  • Its nice to see that all employees have been told that they are now out of a job. Just a shame that I have had to sit surfing the net all morning to find out though. This is an absolute sham and a ******* disgrace how we have been treated. And if we son't get paid theres gonna be all hell to pay!!!

  • Saw it coming in the end. Hope head office will be contatcting all it's staff and telling us what is going on exactly and also information on if we willl actually be getting paid this friday. • I know . I just turned on the radio & found out more in 3 min than I have ll week....just sums them up really doesnt it

So what now?? I already got a new job to go to but this months pay !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Is it even worth holding out hope

been paid late twice and contrary to Dick Harris' storiy we WERE NOT TOLD at all the 1st time till after...HSBC went on strike folks not our fault !!! then the 2nd time we were told it would be late by email at 530pm THE NIGHT BEFORE THEY WERE DUE TO GO IN

so basically just about the same amount of notice as we got for this

DISGUSTING...NOT THAT ANY OF THEM WILL CARE

  • and what about the not so long term employees who will get NOTHING !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Haha... long term in the shops? For our branch getting through probation warrants a celebration.

Anyone having served less than two years won't see any redundancy, and now its down to the administrators what sort of 'Notice' package is put together.

  • yeah NOTICE thats funny !!!!

what is that again ???? we never had any from the company about ANYTHING else...ever so why start now

  • Although I am sorry for Time's employees who seem to be getting the same treatment Time usually reserve for their customers. I for one will not be sorry to see the back of Time computers.

If the company had spent as much time and energy improving their products as they spent thinking up new dirty tricks to tie customers to a rotten deal then perhaps they would not be in the hands of the receivers now.

Hopefully we will not see their like again.

  • I echo Simons thoughts - I am truly sorry for all thhardworking people who will lose their jobs as a result of this - but I am delighted that no other customers will have to go through the nightmare of after sales problems that I and thousands of others have. I just hope the guys who were in charge get what they deserve!!!!

  • Unfortunately - the 'guys in charge' (which is laughable in itself) will probably get away with it - as the directors did a runner last week, who can be held to account now?

My thoughts go out to the employees and their families who are going to face an uncertain future now thanks to Granville Technology Group.

The Directors will have plenty of money to survive but what about the 'working' men & women with every day needs like food for themselves and families and mortgages to pay or rent to pay?

How many people will lose their homes thanks to the tactics of Granvilles Directors.

I'm sure the Directors will be laughing all the way to the bank - while some of the workers are left crying in the gutter.

I find the whole situation a disgrace and the directors should be held to account and forced to pay back some of their money to help out the people who really need it.

But it seems the laws in this country allow them to get away with what they want.

I am just glad I got out of the company several years ago when I saw how they treated customers and staff alike.

  • It couldn't have happened to a nicer bunch. Well known for selling broken kit, and failing to deal satisfactory with the numerous after sales complaints they got. Consistently bottom of all customer satisfaction surveys by quite some distance.

Just to rub salt in the wound, despite having gone into administration, as I write this their web sites are not only still up and running, but also still accepting new orders.

  • DON'T EXPECT TO GET PAID THIS MONTH. JUST BEEN TOLD BY MY AREA MANAGER WE'RE GETTING SQUAT!!! HOPE DR T AND ALL THE OTHER DIRECTORS ARE ENJOYING THEMSELVES ABROAD, THANKS FOR THINKING OF US YOU *******!!!

  • Just in case anyone doubted it for a second we have been told that we won't be getting any pay from our former employer tiny.com. We've basically been told that if we want to see any money our only option is to claim it from the government! It's unbelievable that the company does this to its loyal workforce TWO DAYS before payday!!!!
I really feel sorry not only for all of my ex-colleagues but also for all of the customers who haven't got their machines/plasmas - hopefully if you paid by credit card then you'll have a degree of protection, if not then sadly who knows...

  • I worked for them years ago. When they closed my store the area manager was told to "hang on" to me as i was one of the best salesmen in the company, I just laughed in his face and asked what the redundancy package was. I feel sorry for the employees who are now stuffed as I still have friends in the company. And i really think that the (ex) directors should be held to account, but Uk law doesn't allow it.... I hope that tw*t rickard harris loosesout as he has screwed mos people around during his time there. But I Guess his arse is covered too. I guess there is always mob rule, 1500 pissed off employees can do alot to a building.

I hope you all find jobs if you deserve them and I hope your house / car / boat / etc. gets reposesed if you deserve that

  • I'm not surprised that Time has gone to the dogs, it's about "Time" too! My 1st experience was with a "Time" shop, in Lewisham, around 3 years ago. I purchased a printer and USB lead & the printer was faulty. It caused some sort of power surge to my USB card and damaged it. I returned both to the shop and was refused an exchange or refund. The staff argued with me and after assaulting me, they called security to remove me from the store, whilst I was calling the police. I was barred from the shop & they kept the printer & USB lead. After dealing with Head Office & being promised delivery of another printer, I never got it. The shop was closed down 3 weeks later, when I passed again. I have now got a new PC, from Tiny ( I was promised by the sales member that Tiny is a totally different company and she guaranteed that they have changed for the better ), and it is not what I wanted. When I first ordered, in February 2005, I had ordered an AMD PC with DVD RW, DVD ROM, TV Card, 8 Card Reader and Floppy Disk drive. The System I received didn't have a TV Card, Card Reader, DVD ROM or Floppy Disk Drive. I was asked to return it and they changed it with what was supposed to be a Pentium 4. However, I received a Intel Celeron PC in return, which is only a 2.4Gb processor. It is slow compared with the 3.2Gb AMD that I wanted. I didn't take it any further as I didn't trust the word of their Customer Services & I will never trust any employee of Granville ever again.

  • I have a Time Computer and if February this year after paying what was supposed to be the latest up to date version anti-virus package ,and when I loaded it into my computer guess what ?
they had only sent me the old version of what I had bought two years ago.
Having made lots of phone calls and sending e-mails to the press office about my complaint, even though I have now been sent the updated new version of the anti virus and been given the run around by being given wrong telephone numbers for the company which manufactures the anti virus product no body from Time has said sorry.

  • I bought a "Tiny" computer some years ago and it worked well enough until 12 months after I bought it when something went "Whirr-clunk" and it stopped working. I phoned the support line who said "Well your warranty's near enough expired anyway - you're on your own matey".

Fortunately I knew enough to fix the problem myself but I never bought another Tiny system. I spent years telling people not to buy them because their support was cr*p and their kit exploded.

So I guess I have helped contribute to the downfall of this company. Me and the thousands like me who were treated the same way.

To quote Niven & Pournelle, "Think of it as evolution in action". The fit prosper. The weak, inefficient and shoddy get discarded.

  • I think it is absolutely disgusting that I heard about the administrators going in from BBC Radio 4 news! I was on my way to visit a client and promptly turned right around! Surely they were aware that they would not be able to pay us for July?they should have just told us and at least we would have not wasted a whole month working for nothing! then again that would have been the decent thing to do wouldn't it?
