VMware chief sees the end of the traditional OS

At the VMworld conference in San Francisco, VMware CEO Paul Maritz anticipates the changing role of the operating system. Maritz says that, increasingly, hardware coordination and software abstract services are moving to virtual layers and that the traditional OS is becoming just one component of the virtual framework.

Microsoft demos new 'social' phone

At a press event in San Francisco, Microsoft's Robbie Bach and Derek Snyder unveil the Kin mobile phones. Based on the Windows 7 operating system, the new phones will have extensive social networking built in and will also be able to access the Zune music service.

Microsoft highlights new devices at CES 2010

At CES 2010 in Las Vegas, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer takes the stage and highlights some of the key devices and technologies the company will be launching in the coming year. He demos a new slate PC from HP running Windows 7 as well as some new Windows Mobile phones. Robbie Bach, the company's president of Entertainment and Devices, also talks about Microsoft's plan for Natal and announces a ship date of Christmas 2010.

Google demos 'Earth' app on new Android OS

At Google's headquarters in Mountain View, Calif., Senior Product Manager Erick Tseng demos Google Earth for Android. The new app mirrors the Google Earth application on the desktop. The app also supports the voice features in Google Earth, searching for geographic locations like "Mount Fuji."

Windows 7, a better power saver?

At Microsoft's Silicon Valley Campus, ZDNet's Sumi Das talks to Microsoft's chief environmental strategist, Rob Bernard, about power-saving features in the new Windows 7 operating system.
