Dictionary
Definition: address bar
The field in a Web browser that is used to locate a Web site. After typing the URL into the address bar and pressing Enter, the home page of the site is retrieved. If the URL or a specific Web page or document is entered rather than only the domain name of the organization, that particular element is retrieved instead. Also called an "address field" or "URL bar."
Address Bars and Search Boxes Are Merging
Internet novices often confuse the address bar with the search engine box that also appears at the top of the browser. However, the search engines rank the Web site at the top of the results page, and all the user has to do is click it. The only mistake is when a search is entered into the address bar, and browser's are now able to handle that as well. The Google Chrome browser has one address bar and directs the request to a Web site or to Google, depending on its structure. Firefox's Awesome Bar directs requests based on user history. See Awesome Bar and address.
The Address Bar
Address bar on left, search box on right. The favicon (favorites icon) comes from the Web site; otherwise, a stock icon is displayed. In this Firefox browser example, recently-visited sites are shown by clicking the History icon.
