Definition: AirPort
Apple's brand name for its Wi-Fi functionality in the Mac computer line; primarily the Wi-Fi built into Mac laptops and Apple wireless routers. In 1999, Apple included Wi-Fi in its iBook laptop and introduced the AirPort Base Station wireless router. Subsequent AirPorts included a USB port and higher speed (see 802.11). See wireless router.
Airport Express and AirTunes
Introduced in 2004, AirPort Express supports fewer users (10 rather than 50) but adds a media hub. Connected to a home stereo via analog or digital audio outputs, the "AirTunes" feature receives music streamed from a Mac or PC running iTunes.
From AirTunes to AirPlay
In 2010, Apple replaced AirTunes with AirPlay, which extends streaming to non-Apple products such as A/V receivers and stereo systems. AirPlay also enables iDevices (iPhones, iPads, etc.) to stream audio as well as video to AirPlay devices. See Time Capsule, digital media hub and iTunes.
An AirPort Base Station
Like most Apple products, this earlier AirPort base station did not resemble a wireless router from any other vendor. (Image courtesy of Apple Inc.)
