Definition: Apple TV
(1) A smart TV set from Apple. Although a "real" TV from the company had long been rumored, in February 2012, Apple CEO Tim Cook said the company had no interest in selling TV sets. Since Apple's existing Apple TV digital media hub (definition #2 below) is a 10-ounce set-top box, it was always a stretch to think the company would start warehousing huge cartons. The Apple TV hub adds functionality to any new TV set, and Apple can update its firmware, as well as create new models, all the time.
(2) A digital media hub from Apple that connects to an HDTV set, enabling music, movies and photos to be streamed over a wired or wireless home network. Users can view content from their Mac or Windows computers running iTunes, view YouTube videos, as well as stream movies and TV programs from Apple and movies from Netflix. The Apple TV's AirPlay feature accepts content via Wi-Fi from the user's iPhone, iPad or iPod touch.
From Storage to Streaming Only
Introduced in 2007 and running a version of the Mac OS, the first Apple TV had a hard disk and attached to the TV via HDMI and analog component video. In 2010, the second-generation model was redesigned for streaming only by eliminating the hard disk. It also dropped the analog ports, requiring digital HDMI connectivity to the TV.
In 2012, the third-generation Apple TV boosted output from 720p to 1080p, although users can choose resolution based on the speed of their Internet connection. In addition, photos stored in iCloud can be streamed to the device. See digital media hub, Internet TV and AirPlay.
