Definition: cloud security
Protection against illegal or wrongful access to the data stored in a service provider's facilities on the Internet. Cloud security is a major concern, because there is typically no way to monitor or assess precisely how well protected the provider's systems really are. As a safety measure, most enterprises and many consumers encrypt their data before uploading sensitive files to a third-party cloud provider. See cloud computing and private cloud.
