To make a duplicate of the original. In digital electronics, all copies are identical, which is both a blessing and curse. The blessing is that data can be maintained and remanufactured accurately forever. The curse is that anyone can duplicate copyrighted material and send it around the world in seconds. It all depends on which side of the fence you sit (see Napster). See shallow copy, Win Copy between windows, Win Copy/Move files/folders, DOS Copy and DOS XCopy.
