A directory of users and resources in a network. When sent a username, it returns the profile of the individual, which can include permissions for data access, as well as employee information. When given a machine name, it returns the configuration of the hardware and software. Directory services typically use hierarchical databases for fast lookups. See x.500, LDAP, naming service, Active Directory and ULS server.
