Definition: Dropbox
A Web-based storage service from Dropbox, Inc. (www.dropbox.com) that is used to synchronize files between Windows, Mac and Linux desktops. Introduced in 2008, Dropbox is available in free and paid versions. After installing the Dropbox client application in their computers, users drag files into their "My Dropbox" folder, which become available in the My Dropbox folders of other machines and designated users. Files can be kept private or made public, allowing anyone with Internet access and a Web browser to download them.
An Alternative to E-Mail
Dropbox provides a way to transfer large files to another user without increasing file size, which occurs when files are attached to e-mail messages (see e-mail attachment). In addition, mail servers often reject attachments that are executable files, whereas Dropbox has no such restrictions. It allows files of any type and size, except files accessed via a Web browser are limited to 300MB. See online storage.
