Definition: home network

(1) Two or more computers in the home that are interconnected for file sharing and/or Internet access. A home network uses the same Ethernet technology found in companies, except that the home network is typically configured as one network, whereas a large company has many subnetworks for traffic and security purposes. In addition, the large enterprise uses more costly routers and switches that support network management for conveying status information to a central console. See wireless LAN, LAN, Ethernet and powerline network.

(2) The control of lights and appliances in a home, typically using the electrical system as the transmission medium. See domotics, X10, CEBus and digital home.
