Definition: iCloud

A suite of Internet-based services from Apple. Introduced in 2011 as a free service with up to 5GB of storage, it includes e-mail, contacts and calendars, as well as automatic synchronization of content between Macs, iDevices and Windows PCs. When photos are taken or documents are created in a mobile device, they can be automatically pushed to other devices. iCloud also stores apps and iBooks, which can be pushed to all mobile devices after purchasing. Find My iPhone helps retrieve a lost device by pinpointing it on a map, sending it a "lost and found" message or locking it remotely.

iTools -> Dot Mac -> MobileMe -> iCloud
iCloud superseded MobileMe, which was a paid service, extended to June 2012 for existing subscribers. MobileMe provides similar functions, but its Web site hosting (iWeb) was discontinued in iCloud.

Introduced in 2002 as iTools, it was free to Mac users but soon changed to a paid subscription service. Later renamed .Mac (dot Mac), the name was changed again in 2008 to MobileMe. In 2011, MobileMe was superseded by iCloud and iOS 5, a major update to Apple's mobile operating system.
