Definition: Kindle Fire
An Android tablet from Amazon.com that features a 7" screen and Wi-Fi. Introduced in the fall of 2011, the Fire combines a tablet computer and e-reader with a portal to Amazon's vast collection of music, videos and products. It debuted at $199 with a 7" screen, which is considerably less costly than other tablets; however, all apps must be donwloaded from the Amazon Appstore. The Fire uses Amazon's Silk Web browser, which shares processing with the server to make page downloading faster.
Kindle Fire Vs. Original Kindle
Like all tablet computers, the Fire's battery life is measured in hours, whereas battery life on the original Kindle with its monochrome E Ink screen is measured in days and weeks. In addition, the monochrome Kindle can be viewed in direct sunlight. However, the Fire's color images make it an excellent e-reader for young children, and as long as battery and glare are not issues, the Fire is an all-in-one tablet, e-reader and Amazon shopping portal. See Kindle.
