Definition: Mac mini
The smallest and lightest Mac desktop computer. Housed in an 8x8" case less than 1.5 inches thick, it is a full-fledged Mac that takes up hardly any space. Introduced in 2005 with PowerPC G4 processors, Intel-based units came out in the following year. Monitor, keyboard and mouse are extra cost items. For users who want to set up a Web, mail or file server, a quad-core mini with OS X Server is also available. See Macintosh models and Macintosh.
Early Mac Mini

The Mini's Predecessor
In 2000, the G4 Cube was Apple's first compact Mac. Award winning for its design, it was soon dropped. The on/off switch was too sensitive, and the air vent was poorly located. If covered, the unit overheated and stopped. (Image courtesy of Apple Inc.)
