Definition: McAfee
(McAfee, Inc., Santa Clara, CA, www.mcafee.com) A leading provider of intrusion prevention software. In 1997, McAfee Associates and Network General merged to become Network Associates. McAfee Associates was founded by John McAfee in 1989 for antivirus software, and Network General was founded in 1986 by Leonard Shustek and Harry Saal, which developed the Sniffer line of network analysis products.
The year Network Associates was formed, it acquired the popular PGP encryption software from Phil Zimmerman, but sold it to the newly formed PGP Corporation in 2002 (see PGP). In 2004, Network Associates returned to its roots. It announced the sale of its Sniffer business to investors who would recreate Network General, while it renamed the company McAfee, Inc. and specialized in intrusion prevention, antivirus and related security software.
